PhD Position in Digital Humanities and Computational Semiotics – University of Lausanne

We are pleased to announce a fully funded PhD position at the University of Lausanne (UNIL) in the field of Digital Humanities and Computational Semiotic Studies, starting on October 1st, 2025.

The position is part of a research project centered on the computational study of Charles S. Peirce’s manuscripts, combining OCR/HTR technologies, Natural Language Processing, knowledge engineering, and data visualization. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of advanced digital tools to analyze, interpret, and valorize Peirce’s intellectual legacy in collaboration with international partners.

Key tasks include:

  • Digital transcription of Peirce’s manuscripts using tools like Transkribus and eScriptorium
  • Application of NLP techniques and large language models for textual and semantic analysis
  • Construction of a knowledge graph based on TEI-XML and domain-specific ontologies
  • Development of interactive visualizations and research interfaces

Requirements:

  • MA in Digital Humanities, Computational Linguistics, or a related field (completed by October 2025)
  • Strong interest in combining digital methods (OCR, NLP, knowledge graphs) with theoretical research
  • Proficiency in English (B2–C1 level or native speaker)
  • A collaborative, interdisciplinary mindset

Contract details:

  • Duration: 3 years
